This week, South Carolina’s lgbt community celebrated a huge victory which you probably won’t hear anything about.
Last year state legislators came up with the idea of a bill addressing teen dating violence. It was an excellent idea and a great bill, that is until some legislators wrote in a codicil which would have excluded lgbt relationships, thereby telling lgbt teens that the state of South Carolina really doesn’t care if they suffer relationship violence.
Through quiet tenacity and steadfast devotion, several statewide lgbt groups and their allies caused the bill to die in committee during this legislative session.
For us sensible South Carolina residents, it was a much needed victory because let’s face it: South Carolina right now is a damn embarrassment.
From Gov. Mark Sanford’s dalliances on Argentinian soil, to the alleged affairs of possibly soon-to-be governor Nikki Haley, to “Captain Redneck” Jake Knotts, and culminating with the odyssey of Alvin Greene, this state will most likely be single handedly responsible for the Daily Show receiving yet another Emmy for Best Variety Series.
But such is the history of South Carolina. From starting the Civil War by firing on Fort Sumter to pioneering the practice of lawmakers cane-whipping each other in the Congressional halls, this state seems to be bound and determined to designate itself as the insane cousin whom one lets out of the attic at his own risk.
However in spite of how low we sink, many South Carolinians - be they gay or straight, young or old, black, white, Latino, etc - still love this state
And even though the sensible thing would be for a group of us to put on black wigs and sunglasses, get the hell out of town, and tell inquiring minds that we are from the planet Venus, we are determined to hold our heads high even though we continue to be dragged through new controversies by those whom we have selected to represent us.
Why shouldn’t we? It’s like a circus down here.
In 2004, Gov. Sanford brought two pigs to the State House to express his displeasure in the overriding of his vetoes. And the pigs “expressed” themselves all over him.
He was re-elected with over 50 percent of the vote.
We have a statue on the State House grounds of a man (Ben Tillman) who proudly bragged about using violence to keep African-Americans disenfranchised
And I won’t even mention the late Strom Thurmond except for to say that when many South Carolinians displayed shock over his secret African-American daughter, we were just pretending.
Basically, us sensible folks down here have come to the conclusion that South Carolina is not a state, but a Fellini movie. Therefore it’s best to grab a few balloons and either join the parade of bizarreness or just watch it go by.
Besides, some of us don’t look exactly fetching in black wigs and sunglasses.
Analyzing and refuting the inaccuracies lodged against the lgbt community by religious conservative organizations. Lies in the name of God are still lies.

South Carolina = hot mess! Thank you for pointing that out, Jon Stewart
I will interrupt the regularly scheduled takedown of religious right lies to let you all know something:
South Carolina is a hot mess.
I'm sorry but this is my state, my racial heritage, and even my first name involved here and I am totally mind boggled about the entire Alvin Greene thing.
I had a friend last night to tell me that attacks on Greene added up to racism. Of course if I were to speak honestly, that same friend thinks that Obama is several shades of the Anti-Christ warmed over, so I guess it's no surprise that I don't take his opinion seriously.
But I continue to be overwhelmed about the ridiculousness of the entire thing, so I will let Jon Stewart of The Daily Show take over:

When religious right talking heads feud, it's fun, fun, fun!
Believe it or not, there are some religious right talking heads who don't get along. And when they launch barbs at each other, it's fun to watch.
Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out spotlighted a post from Randy Thomas of the ex-gay group Exodus International. The post was about a recent Time magazine article spotlighting "Gay Day at Disney." Maybe it's just me but I got the impression that Thomas was calling the article into question for showing lgbts in a normal environment having fun just like others attending Disney.
Besen took Thomas to task over this quite adequately.
But there was one portion of Thomas's piece which caught my eye:
To answer your question, yes he was talking about our "friend" Peter LaBarbera. It's no secret that Thomas and LaBarbera don't get along. One can chalk it up to different philosophies. Thomas is from the school of the "let's passively aggressive attack lgbts while at the same time claiming to minister to them," while LaBarbera is from the school of "gays are nasty, period."
Last year, this difference of philosophy exploded in an over-too-soon, but highly entertaining feud between LaBarbera, Thomas, and of all people, Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel.
I found it hilarious to read these so-called "fishers of men" stoop to a level of bitchy sniping not seen since the classic motion picture The Women.
Who knows what will happen this time. Maybe LaBarbera will ignore Thomas's swipe.
I hope not though. The world would be so much more fun if religious right folks sniped at each other like the following:
Oh well, I can always dream.

Within the Christian community it also bothers me when Christian activists will go into these events, take a few tabloid TMZ worthy pictures and then post those as the only representation of what gay people are trying to do to our country. I always maintain that stigmatizing (anyone) is not Christ-like.

Anti-gay Congressman attacks Obama for showing 'partiality' to African-Americans
Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) has a history of making ridiculous comments but today's attack on President Obama takes the cake:
I'm pretty sure Fox News, particularly John Stossel, will bend over backwards to defend or trivialize the absolute offensiveness of King's remarks.
But his comments are significant not only because of their inanity but especially when one takes into account that King isn't exactly a friend of the lgbt community.
For one thing, he has no problem in associating with anti-gay hate groups such as Mass Resistance in Massachusetts.
For another thing, it was his office which sent President Obama a letter asking for the dismissal of Education Dept. appointee Kevin Jennings partly on the grounds that Jennings facilitated the sexual abuse of an underaged teen.
This letter was sent out even after King's office was informed that the charge was bogus.
It's something for the lgbt and African-American communities to remember the next time the silly argument of is "gay rights the same as African-American civil rights" comes up.
While this argument festers resentment, people like Rep. King are putting both communities in the same boat and drilling holes in its bottom.
Perhaps it would best serve both the lgbt and African-Americans communities to stop squabbling over symbolic positions and instead recognize their common enemies . . or learn how to tread deep waters.
During an appearance on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show this morning to discuss Arizona’s immigration law, King suggested President Barack Obama was a racist and “favors the black person” while carrying out his presidential duties.
. . . “When you look at this administration, I'm offended by Eric Holder and the president also, their posture. It looks like Eric Holder said that white people in America are cowards when it comes to race,” said King. “And I don't know what the basis of that is but I'm not a coward when it comes to that and I'm happy to talk about these things and I think we should.”
King added: “But the president has demonstrated that he has a default mechanism in him that breaks down the side of race - on the side that favors the black person.”

A sad flashback for Monday morning
I found this clip last weekend and felt that I had to post it.
Back in the day when the AIDS crisis was at its beginning stage, there was a lot of ignorance out there. Granted, there is still so much ignorance but geez, it awful back then.
The clips is a segment of the talk show Donahue in which several guests talk about the disease. One of the guests is comedian Stephen Stucker (Airplane) who at the time was suffering from it.
What struck me about this clip is Stucker's behavior. Some folks may call him highly inappropriate or demeaning. I disagree. Here is a man who is facing a disease, which will kill him. At the same time he has to cope with that, he has to educate the public who, as you can see by some of the ignorant questions and comments, allowed their hysteria to rule their senses.
I guess the clip is a reminder that we must never forget those who came before us and who died while valiantly fighting fear and ignorance.

Know Your LGBT History - Adorable Adrian Adonis
A few months ago, I featured a segment on the "Exotic" Adrian Street, a rule-breaking professional wrestler who acted gay to unnerve his opponents.
At the time, I said Street's portrayal was an excellent satire on homophobic fears.
Unfortunately there have been other exploitations of homophobic fears in pro wrestling and they weren't all as well done as Street.
The late Adrian Adonis (Keith A. Franke) is not known to many except for the die-hard pro wrestling fans (like myself) and this is a shame because he was one of the best.
In the American Wrestling Association, he and former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura formed the East-West Connection and held the tag team titles:
Then he moved to the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wresting Entertainment) where he held tag team titles with the late Dick Murdoch.
During this time, he had a tough guy leather gimmick which was pretty cool:
The man interviewing Adonis is one "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. Then Piper was in his super rulebreaker, bad guy wrestler mode with his show "Piper's Pit," which made him legendary amongst wrestling fans. Remember this because it's important for later.
Then things changed. Adonis took to not only wearing dresses and make-up during interviews and also while he wrestled:
This led to a very interesting angle. An "angle" in wrestling terms is a storyline. In this particular "angle," Roddy Piper had left the WWF due to a leg injury and Adonis had taken over his show, changing it from "Piper's Pit" into the "Flower Shop."
Needless to say when Piper came back, he wasn't pleased. And yes it was because of the homosexual implications. If you don't want to watch the entire clip below, here is the gist. Piper is HIGHLY offended by Adonis's show and his manner and says so, leading him to be destroyed by not only Adonis but two other wrestlers:
Which led to a match at Wrestlemania 3 where the loser gets his hair cut. Guess who lost?:
I don't know what's worse - the fact that a talented wrestler like Adrian Adonis got saddled with such an ugly, homophobic storyline or the fact that it's probably the main thing people remember about him because he was killed in a car accident soon afterwards.
It's sad because he deserved better.

Arizona mayor insults gay troops during Memorial Day speech
It's one thing to have a personal belief that homosexuality is a sin, but it's something else entirely to have that belief lead you into acting like a damn fool
Someone should make Yuma, AZ mayor Al Krieger aware of this fact. At a Memorial Day service honoring fallen troops at the Desert Lawn Cemetery, he disrespected our lgbt fighting men and women by saying the following:
And then to make matters worse, while refusing to apologize for the comment, he compared himself to former presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln:
I hate situations when public officials make ugly anti-gay comments and then try to make themselves seem noble for doing such.
The ugliness of Kreiger's comments is only exacerbated by his self-righteous tone.
Kreiger would do well to remember that the freedom he enjoys, including the right to run his mouth like a horse's ass, was bought and paid for partly by the lives and limbs of "lacy-drawered, limp-wristed people."
And if he can't say thank you, then maybe he shouldn't say anything at all.
Just a suggestion.

Make the Health and Human Services aware of Peter Sprigg's anti-gay bias
This idea came from Jeremy Hooper of Goodasyou.org
I would suggest that more of us get involved to do this sort of thing. The following is my email to the Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability (ACBSA):

I would suggest that more of us get involved to do this sort of thing. The following is my email to the Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability (ACBSA):
Dear Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability (ACBSA):
As I understand it, tomorrow you will be hearing testimony from Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council concerning the ban on gay blood donors.
While I understand the need for parity and listening to both sides of an issue, please bear in mind that Sprigg is not an unbiased or an accurate witness in matters of the gay community.
In 2008, he has advocated for the exportation of gays out of the United States and earlier this year, on Hardball with Chris Matthews, he said that "gay behavior" should be outlawed.
Again, I understand the need for parity, but when one is dealing with a serious issue such as this, it is crucial that one hears accurate and unbiased testimony so that the right course of action will be taken.
You will not receive accurate and unbiased testimony from Sprigg.
Thank you for your time,
Alvin McEwen

Is this what Peter LaBarbera want to teach youths about the gay community?
Since news came out yesterday of Peter LaBarbera trying to start a "Truth Academy" designed to fight the alleged "gay agenda" and "reverse years of pro-”gay” brainwashing in the schools and popular culture," I couldn't help but to ruminate over it.
The news of LaBarbera's "Truth Academy" was met with derision by some. But let's not be so quick to totally laugh it off, especially when one takes into account who his "instructors" are going to be.
LaBarbera's tenative list is a veritable who's who when it comes to disseminating false and dehumanizing data on lgbts, such as Matt Barber, seen here at the religious right "Great Awakening" panel discussion on lgbt rights, where gay rights are linked to the raping of disabled veterans, child molestation, bestiality, and fecal matter:
One wonders if LaBarbera will invite homophobic Ugandan Martin Ssempa to teach students. After all, this sort of thing seems to be up his alley:

It always happens. Every time I promise that a certain post is coming up, something wild always comes up which causes me to pre-empt it.
Peter LaBarbera, head of the anti-gay group Americans for Truth, claims to have spent many years "tracking" and "exposing" the alleged "gay agenda."
However his legacy will be the monicker of "Porn Pete" given to him by members of the lgbt community for his penchant of going to subcultural and leather events to take pictures of gay attendees while giving heterosexual attendees a free pass.
In this age of the Rekers rentboy scandal, draw your own conclusions about this sort of behavior. I won't because I am neither a psychologist or teacher.
However, LaBarbera is now seeking to be the latter. He is actually attempting to start the "Truth Academy," which he says is designed for instructing youths (between the ages of 14 to 25) lessons in "combatting the gay agenda" and supposed homosexual "misinformation." at a cost of $99 a head.
It almost sounds like a plot out of a B-rated science fiction movie (Plan Stop the 'Queers' from Outer Space?), except for the fact that LaBarbera is serious. He has even assembled a team of "instructors," including:
Robert Knight of Coral Ridge Ministries - who has spent years demonizing the lgbt community even to the point of freely citing the discredited research of Paul Cameron, a man who publishes "research papers" accusing gays of such things as wallowing in feces and plunging gerbils up their rectums.
Knight has also in the past described lesbians as "pretty big heavy set women who look like they’ve been over working October Fest for the last six years "
Ryan Sorba, Young Conservatives of California - a man so nastily anti-gay that he was booed off of the stage at a right-wing conservative conference for his comments.
Laurie Higgins, Illinois Family Institute - who has compared the lgbt community to the Nazi Party and in a recent harangue, viciously attacked President Obama for acknowledging that June as LGBT Pride Month:
Greg Quinlan, Parents and Friends of Gays and Ex-Gays - who, when he is not distorting the words of prominent researchers such as Dr. Francis Collins, attempts to spin court defeats into victories for his fraudulent group.
And last but not least:
Matt Barber, Liberty Counsel - who has made a career out spinning the false tale of how he was fired from his job at AllState Insurance "simply" for writing an anti-gay column on "his own time," while not commenting on the allegations that he not only used company equipment to do so but also identified himself as an employee of AllState in the piece in question.
Barber is also the same man who described gay relationships as “one man violently cramming his penis into another man’s lower intestine and calling it ‘love.’”
And lest we forget, Barber is also the same man who encouraged attendees at a conference last year to go into more detail in describing gay sex acts as a way to disgust people.
Imagine him instructing 14 to 25-year-olds on how to be anti-gay.
With all due respect to LaBarbera, his "Truth Academy" and his "crackpot" team of associates, I wouldn't take my pet dog to his academy much less any youth I knew.
And I would sincerely hope many others would have the good common sense not to either.

Once again, Barack Obama has affirmed his commitment to radical, subversive change; his sycophancy to the homosexual lobby; and, implicitly, his embrace of heresy.
...
...the sexual impulses and sexual behavior of homosexuals and cross-dressers are irrelevant to their contributions. Therefore, making irrelevant characteristics the central focus of "Pride" month as Obama did is absurd. More important, the particular irrelevant characteristics that Obama has chosen to highlight are, in the view of many, disordered and immoral.
Those who experience, for example, selfish, vain, greedy, gluttonous, deceitful, promiscuous, incestuous, sadistic, pederastic, gossipy, philandering, or polyamorous impulses and engage in behaviors impelled by such impulses have also contributed to society. How would Americans respond if the president were to proclaim June "Polyamory Pride Month"? Substituting another irrelevant and morally questionable characteristic for homosexuality brings into sharper relief the dubious nature of Obama's proclamation.

Rep. Ike Skelton uses children to shield his homophobia and other Wednesday midday news briefs
Rep. Ike Skelton is concerned DADT repeal would harm the children - I am SO TIRED of the "won't someone think of the children" excuse for homophobia. I'm preparing a special post on it for tonight. Watch for it.
Audio: 'The beginning of the end of America' - Can we get any more repulsively overdramatic?
Easy victories for incumbent judges - A religious right plan to highjack the California judiciary goes down in flames. Life is good.
Oklahoma's first openly transgender candidate will face Kern in fall election - It would be so awesome for Kern to lose to this candidate! Talk about kismet.
Center for gay Latinos opens in D.C. - I'm all for this! The needs of EVERYONE in the lgbt community should be met.

Anti-gay church disowns member
Two things about this clip:
1. No matter how much we laugh at how the Westboro Baptist Church makes homophobic fools of themselves, we shouldn't forget that there are real people, and not stick figures, being harmed by homophobic rhetoric. Hatred has a way of doing that.
2. For those who may say that Lauren is better off, I slightly disagree. Sometimes, it's hard to kick aside family, no matter how nasty they may seem.

Exodus International, butts, and gays 'ramming their agenda down the throats of Americans'
A quote today from Alan Chambers, the president of the "ex-gay" group Exodus International, caught my attention:
Granted, Chambers's admission comes as no surprise to anyone who follows the madness of anti-gay groups, but his verbiage stands up because it brings to mind something that needs to be addressed.
Why do so many homophobic people constantly complain about the so-called "homosexual agenda" being "rammed down their throats?
I kid you not. It's like that adage that every black person knows at least one person who goes by the nickname of "Peaches." I don't remember a week going in a long time by without reading something by someone homophobic claiming that gays and lesbians want to "ram" something "down their throats."
And why is that? Is it a skillful use of semantics? Semantics is a very important part of the religious right's propaganda campaign against the lgbt community. Through skillful phrasing, religious right spokespeople can semantically describe the lgbt community as invaders seeking to rape, pillage, and cause basic havoc, like so:
Of course maybe I could be acting needlessly paranoid.
Maybe the Rekers rentboy scandal has me looking to see a secret scared gay or lesbian behind every anti-gay comment.
Maybe sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
See, now they got me talking about stuff to be placed in people's mouths.
“Criticism is easy to come by at Exodus,” said Chambers. “We are a large and diverse organization made up of many members. Our growth over the years has caused us to not always know what the hand or foot are doing, which sometimes causes us to look like we are ‘all butt’.

“But unfortunately, the evangelist observes, many Christians have been bullied into submission on the aggressive homosexual agenda in public schools.” - Evangelist Proposes to Combat Homosexual Agenda in Public Education, Agape Press, May 11, 2005
“Elsewhere in the battle against the homosexual agenda, the Broward County School Board in Florida has voted to allow a pro-homosexual group to indoctrinate its teachers on tolerance.” - Children Adopted by Homosexuals Suffer, Family Advocate Says, Agape Press, April 25, 2002
“The ACLU continues to use a law license to bully school districts and harass parents in order to brainwash their kids abut the ‘normalcy’ of homosexuality.” - Jan LaRue, ACLU Seeks Mandatory Homosexual Sensitivity Training, Concerned Women for America press release, July 14, 2005
.“For the third time in recent years, voters in Maine will go to the voting booth to stop the homosexual agenda being (from) being forced on them by activists and their own legislature” - Maine Activist Condemns Elitist Lawmakers Pushing Homosexual Agenda, the American Family Association, July 15, 2005
“One pro-family advocate feels the ACLU, in its efforts to force the homosexual agenda in American schools, is using the bullying tactics of Chairman Mao to ‘reprogram’ staff and students on the issue of homosexuality.” - Knight: ACLU’s Pro-Homosexual ‘Bullying’ Tactics Reminiscent of Chairman Mao, Agape Press, July 21, 2005

Janet Porter: homosexuals and 'baby-killers' are on the same side as the 'enemies of God'
One would think that after her huge string of embarrassments, religious right denizen Janet Porter would learn the definition of either "discernment" or "regrouping."
No such luck.
Today, the lovely Ms. Porter raised "holy hell" in response to being dropped by VCY, the Christian station which ran her radio program for her disturbing sojourn in the belief of Dominionism (or the belief that Christians are called by God take everything over) even though she was dismissed a few months ago.
And how could Porter be a "respectable" religious right figure if she didn't attack the lgbt community in her diatribe:
Girlfriend, ANY side of any battle you are on is the wrong side.
And for the edification of everyone, the following is the infamous "Oh Lord I demand you take the power of the media from the 'unrighteous' and give it to the 'righteous'" prayer that will probably be seen by future generations as the moment Ms. Porter officially "jumped the shark" :
Actually I'm not angry with any of Porter's actions. She is a needed commodity in this so-called culture war - for the lgbt community that is.
No matter how slick religious right talking points are or how coached their spokespeople are, it's always good to have someone like Porter around to remind us where they really stand.
No such luck.

We now have two generations who are lost in the lies of humanism, evolution and homosexuality, facilitated into fornication and abortion, trapped in pornography and devastated by divorce. Congratulations.
If you're still having a hard time discerning what to do, here's a helpful hint: if you find yourself on the same side as the ACLU, homosexual activists, the baby killers and the enemies of God, chances are, you're on the wrong side.
